JOE NOVAK &

HUCK LEWIS-BENNETT

COLLABORATION

The COLLABORATION series by Joe Novak and Huck Lewis-Bennet has brought together two painters at different points in their career. With a career spanning nearly thirty years, Novak’s work resides in the permanent collections of The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Hood Museum, and The Palm Springs Art Museum among others. Comparatively, Lewis-Bennett has been painting for under a decade while working internationally as a women’s clothing designer producing his own line and consulting for Moschino, and Alberto Aspesi, among others. While both artists create abstractions that are different and uniquely their own, their shared aesthetic and similar process made this series possible.

What started out in March of 2010 as a trial collaboration between two desert based painter friends evolved into a series of acrylic paintings on panel, the last of which was completed in December of 2011. The idea from the start was for each artist to paint on a fresh panel, and then turn it over to the other for completion. The one precondition was that a panel would be deemed finished only when both agreed that it was. Some panels made it on the first round; others required multiple rounds. The paintings are acrylic or a combination of acrylic and oils.
